How to deal with rejection
Chances are you have experienced rejection at some point in your life. Feelings of frustration, confusion and anger are normal, but also temporary. While it may feel natural to avoid rejection at all costs, it is often more valuable to take risks, face failure and learn from the experience than to play it safe. The truth is, rejection is essential in the everyday processes of life. Growth arises through overcoming challenges and facing adversities.
Here are some ways to deal with rejection:
1. Talk to a loved one
When you are experiencing difficulties in your life, talking about your issues to a close one is something that could help. You could gain invaluable life advice, and letting go of your emotions could allow you to think clearly and rationally. However, be careful about who you vent your feelings to; make sure it is someone you trust to listen to you and give you guidance.
2. Discover new interests and try new things
Although it is imperative to not give up after one failure, sometimes it could help your mental state by taking your mind off things and trying out new activities or doing old hobbies. This is especially important because often one loses motivation after rejection. This can distract you from the magnitude of the rejection while keeping your options open.
3. Rejection is temporary; think optimistically
Keep in mind that in the grand scheme of things, one rejection or failure does not determine who you are. For example, one bad test mark or grade is only a small part of your teenage life. Try not to let it hurt your self-esteem or confidence; we are often our own worst enemies when it comes to self-assessment. That’s why it's good to adjust our perspective and consciously realize that rejection is only temporary.
The process of rejection is subjective to everyone, but the most successful people learn to overcome their failures fairly quicker. It’s a lot more damaging to one’s growth, to fear rejection, and therefore lose valuable opportunities. Instead, one should overcome the rejection, learn from the rejection, and aspire to grow from the rejection. This is the optimal solution to fulfill your full potential.
